Tauba-tauba! Foreign tourists running away from Bangladesh, Indian tourists also turned away

Bangladesh Tourism: There are speculations that relations with India will improve after BNP leader Tariq Rehman becomes the new Prime Minister. Relations between the two countries have remained sour for some time. There is an atmosphere of political turmoil in Bangladesh since August 2024.

Tourists are keeping distance from Bangladesh

First the student movement, then the demand for Sheikh Hasina’s resignation, protests against her, the interim government coming to power, continuous violent attacks on minorities – these incidents are continuously in the headlines. The effect of all this is that the number of foreign tourists in Bangladesh has decreased.

Last year i.e. in 2025, the number of foreign tourists here has declined by more than 9 percent. In particular, there has been a huge decline of 73 percent in the number of tourists coming from India. Keeping in mind the atmosphere of instability in Bangladesh, the Indian government has imposed restrictions regarding visas, which has affected tourism.

In the 2024 ‘Travel and Tourism Development Index’ of the World Economic Forum (WEF), Bangladesh is ranked 109th out of 119 countries, which is the lowest in the Asia-Pacific region. This figure is important for Bangladesh because the contribution of tourism in Bangladesh’s GDP is about 3.02 percent.

Loss despite government’s efforts

In Bangladesh, the government has divided tourism into 12 sub-sectors to strengthen tourism and increase employment. That is, the government has divided tourism not only into hotels but also into many different sectors like cafes, resorts, cruise ships, airlines, travel agencies, museums, handicrafts, so that everyone from drivers to cooks and artisans can get employment.

After the loss in tourism in the year 2024, there has been a huge decline in Bangladesh’s foreign income. In 2024, Bangladesh has suffered a loss of 13 million dollars i.e. more than Rs 100 crore in foreign earnings.

Which countries did Indian tourists visit?

On the other hand, the number of Indians going abroad in 2025 increased by 6.6 percent to a record 3.3 crore. However, the number of people going to Saudi Arabia and America has decreased. Last year, the number of Indians going to Canada also decreased by about 16 percent to 8 lakhs.

According to the report, a travel agent said, “Despite reasonable domestic airfares in the non-peak season, due to expensive hotels, the Indian middle class is now finding it cheaper to go to places like UAE, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia instead of Goa or Kerala.”
