The report presented in Parliament by the Central Government shows that in the last four years there has been an increase in the number of tax payers.

If we talk about the figures of zero tax filers, there has been a tremendous jump in them. A total of 6.72 crore returns were filed in the year 2020-21. Out of which, there were 4.84 crore people who had no tax liability and had filed zero tax returns.
At that time, the share of zero filers in the total returns was about 72 percent. At the same time, the number of zero tax filers increased to 5.58 crore in 2024-25. But their share in the total returns dropped to 66 percent. This shows that despite the increase in numbers, their share in the total tax system has decreased.

Talking about the number of taxpayers, a total of 1.88 crore people had paid income tax in the year 2020-21. Which was about 28 percent of the total returns at that time. At the same time, by 2024-25, there was a tremendous increase in the number of tax payers and this number reached 2.82 crores. With this, their share in the total returns has also increased to 34 percent.
The number of zero tax filers increased the most in these states
According to the data, there has been a huge increase in the number of people filing zero tax returns between 2020-21 and 2024-25 in Telangana, Kerala and Odisha. Zero filers in Telangana increased by almost 194 percent. In Kerala this figure has increased by 144 percent. At the same time, the number of zero tax filers in Odisha has increased by about 124 percent.
