The Indian team set a target of 374 runs in front of England in the Oval Test. If Team India is able to defend this score, then the series will be equal to two. The rule says that the team which won the series last time will retain the trophy. When the Indian team last visited England in 2021, the series was still spent on a draw 2-2. When the 2021 series was a draw, the trophy went to England, as England won the series in 2018.
When the result of an India vs England Test series played on England soil, the English team was victorious. Therefore, according to the rules, the trophy will go to the English team even if the Anderson-Tendulkar trophy is being held in 2025.
Only 2 Indian captains have won Tests on the Oval ground
In the history of so far, only 2 Indian captains have been able to win Test matches. The first captain to do so was Ajit Wadekar, under whose captaincy India defeated England by 4 wickets in 1971. After that it took India 50 years to win a Test match at the Oval ground. Going in 2021, under the captaincy of Virat Kohli, Team India defeated the British by 157 runs. Now in 2025, India is able to beat England, so Shubman Gill will only become the third Indian captain to do so.
