US President Donald Trump said on Saturday (July 26, 2025) that Thailand and Cambodia leaders will soon meet for a mutual ceasefire (ceasefire). Violent clashes have been going on between the two countries for the last three days, in which more than 30 people have died and about 1.3 lakh people have become homeless.
US President Trump made a big announcement
President Trump is currently on a tour of Scotland. Trump informed on TRUTH Social that he had separate talks with Thailand acting Prime Minister Phummatha Vachayachai and Cambodia Prime Minister Hun Manet. Trump warned both of them that if the war continues, America will not make a business agreement with them.
Trump wrote, “Both countries want peace immediately and are ready for reconciliation. The two leaders will soon work towards ceasefire.” However, the White House or the embassies of both countries have not yet confirmed this conversation.
The Prime Minister of Malaysia also proposed ceasefire
ASEAN President and Malaysia Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has also proposed a ceasefire to stop the struggle. Cambodia has openly supported the proposal, while Thailand has spoken of ‘theoretically accepted’.
What is the dispute between the two countries?
Actually, many parts of the 817 km long Thailand-Kambodia border have been going on for a long time. Especially about the 11th century ancient Hindu temples like Preh Vihar and Ta Mon Thom, both countries claim that they are in their region. In 1962, the International Court of Court (ICJ) considered Preh Vihar Temple as part of Cambodia, but Thailand did not fully accept the decision. In 2008, when Cambodia tried to include the temple in the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the controversy deepened.
