Thailand-Cambodia Tension: A clash occurred on the border of Thailand and Cambodia on 28 May 2025, killing a Cambodian soldier. This incident took place in the disputed area where no clear boundary line has been determined till date. Since then, the armies of the two countries have increased deployment on the border.
Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Fumhamtham Vachayachai alleged that Cambodia dismissed peace proposals in bilateral talks and deliberately increased tension. After the recent tension of India-Pakistan, now there is a possibility of war between these two countries of Asia.
The Thai Army said in clear terms that Cambodian soldiers and citizens are repeatedly infiltrating the Thai region. Thailand announced that he would have full control over all border posts and is ready for “high-level military campaign”. This statement by the Thai government reflects his commitment to protect his sovereignty, but it also indicates that military action on the border may intensify at any time.
Answer from Cambodia
Cambodia Prime Minister Hun Manet reiterated in a speech that his country does not believe in starting a struggle, but if the attack took place, is fully prepared to rescue. He described the protection of international law and the sovereignty of Cambodia as paramount. He also announced that Cambodia would now take the disputed border areas to the International Court of International Court. This decision was taken when bilateral talks failed.
Controversy has been going on for 100 years
There is an 817 km long border between Thailand and Cambodia, with sovereignty controversy in many places. The limit was determined by France in 1907 when Cambodia was a French colony. In 2008, the controversy took a violent form about the 11th -century Prea Vihair temple, in which dozens of people died and in 2011, artillery shells for a week.
Asean and international community role
Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is currently the ASEAN president, has tried to mediate between the two countries, but failed. This is a serious threat to peace and stability of the entire Asean region.
