The year was 2019. Imran Khan was the Prime Minister of Pakistan and Lieutenant General Asim Munir was the Chief of Pakistan’s intelligence agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Pakistan Army Chief Qamar Javed Bajwa had made him the chief of ISI. Imran Khan was so irritated with Munir that he removed him from the post of ISI Chief within just eight months.
Now let’s come to the year 2025. After about six years, Asim Munir is the first CDF of Pakistan i.e. the head of the three security forces. This post has been created for him by amending the Constitution of Pakistan. Now his will prevails not only in the Army but also in all the three forces, the Air Force and the Navy. Not only this, Munir will remain on it till 2030. On the other hand, former Prime Minister and founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Imran Khan is in jail.
Why did Imran take action against Munir?
In 2019, when Asim Munir was the head of ISI, he had reportedly shown interest in investigating the corruption allegations against Imran Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi and her associates. It is said that Imran did not like Munir’s rashness and he removed Munir from the post of ISI Chief. However, no explanation was given by the Pakistan Army for this reshuffle, due to which Asim Munir had to leave the post within eight months, whereas his tenure was for three years.
However, four years later, in the year 2023, PTI Chief Imran Khan had denied all such allegations. He said, ‘This is completely false. Neither General Asim Munir showed me any evidence of my wife’s corruption nor did I force him to resign because of this.
When Imran Khan got a shock
In April 2022, a no-confidence motion was brought against Imran Khan in the National Assembly of Pakistan. In the 342-member House, the opposition parties got 174 votes in support of the no-confidence motion and within no time power was taken away from Imran Khan. Imran Khan became the first Prime Minister in the history of Pakistan to be removed through a no-confidence motion. Needless to say, the Pakistan Army was behind this entire exercise because the Pakistan Army does not want any Prime Minister of its country to run the government without its consent, whereas Imran was acting completely opposite to the Army.
Imran sent to jail after being removed from the post of PM
After being removed from power, many serious allegations were made against Imran Khan, in many of which he was convicted. He is in jail since the year 2023. He has been kept in Adiala Jail of Rawalpindi. Imran Khan’s family has alleged that they are not being allowed to meet him for more than a month and have asked for proof of his survival. When rumors spread in the country and the world that Imran had died in jail, the officials of Adiala jail rejected these rumors and said that he was completely healthy.
Imran had made allegations against Asim Munir
Last year in May, former Pakistani cricketer Imran had written an article in which he accused Asim Munir of wanting to eliminate the presence of his party from Pakistani politics. Khan announced that if anything happened to him, Munir would be held responsible.
Khan wrote, ‘The military establishment has done whatever it could against me. Now they have nothing left but to kill me. I have said publicly that if anything happens to me or my wife, General Asim Munir will be responsible, but I am not afraid because my faith is strong. I would prefer death to slavery.
Pashtuns have often accused Pakistan Army of violence
Khan’s Pashtun identity, belonging to the country’s second largest group, challenges the military establishment in the country. In the past too, Pashtuns have accused the army of human rights violations and violence. Due to this, Pashtun Tahafuz (Protection) movement was started in 2020. According to the human rights organization Minority Rights Group, Pashtuns have also been frequently targeted by security forces through raids and kidnappings.
Imran Khan’s third wife Bushra Bibi is considered his guide. Years ago, he had reportedly predicted Imran’s rise to power, earning him almost saintly status among his supporters. Now the wife has been jailed for seven years on charges of illegal marriage and corruption and she has also been silenced along with her husband. According to Imran’s son, Khan has been kept alone in a death cell in a completely isolated environment. Rumors continue about his health and whereabouts.
