The police have taken major action in the case of the biggest gold theft in the history of Canada. Peel Region Police on Monday arrested an accused under Project 24K. This investigation is related to the theft of gold worth more than 20 million dollars ($20 million).
Police arrested 43-year-old Arsalan Chaudhary from Toronto’s Pearson International Airport. He was returning to Canada from Dubai (United Arab Emirates). According to the police, Arsalan Chaudhary has no permanent address. He has been charged with theft over $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime and conspiracy to commit a felony.
How gold worth 20 million dollars was stolen
This matter is of 17 April 2023. That day a plane from Zurich, Switzerland reached Toronto Pearson Airport. There were about 400 kg of pure gold in the plane, which was equivalent to approximately 6,600 gold bars. Its price was said to be more than 20 million dollars. Along with this, there was also foreign currency worth 2.5 million dollars. After unloading the cargo at the airport, the consignment was taken to a different place in the airport premises, but after a few hours the entire consignment was found missing.
Many names came up in the investigation
After this the police started investigation at the international level. So far 10 people have been made accused in this case or arrest warrants have been issued against them. One of these names is that of Simran Preet Panesar. He is 33 years old and is a resident of Brampton. Panesar is a former employee of Air Canada and is accused of tampering with the airline’s system to change the identity of the cargo and helping in diverting it. It is believed that he is currently in India. Last year, he was traced to a rented flat on the outskirts of Chandigarh. An arrest warrant is issued against him across Canada.
Names of other arrested accused
Another accused in this case, Archit Grover, was arrested from Toronto Airport in May 2024, when he was returning from India. The accused arrested so far include:
- Parampal Sidhu, 54, former Air Canada employee
- 40 year old Amit Jalota (Ontario)
- Prasath Paramalingam, 36 (Brampton)
- Ali Raza, 37 (Toronto)
- Ammad Choudhary, 43 (Brampton)
- Durante King McLean, 27 (Brampton)
Durante King McLean is currently in custody in America in a case related to arms smuggling.
Police issued statement
Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah said, ‘This investigation shows how capable Peel Regional Police is in dealing with serious and complex crimes. Project 24K is an example of how our police worked with national and international agencies to break organized crime. We want to say clearly, wherever you run or hide, we will find you. Police say that the investigation into this matter is still going on and more arrests may be made.
