Gary Kirsten, the famous coach who made India win the 2011 ODI World Cup, has openly raised questions on the working style of the Pakistan Cricket Board. Kirsten said that while working with the Pakistan team, he had never seen such external interference and noise in his entire coaching career. After his statement, the functioning of Pakistan cricket has once again come into discussion.
Gary Kirsten was made the head coach of Pakistan for two years in April 2024. However, his tenure did not last long. He left the post in October 2024. At that time there were reports that he was not getting along with the Pakistan Cricket Board regarding team selection and decisions. Now Kirsten herself has spoken openly about this entire experience.
‘Why did you appoint the coach?’
In an interview, Kirsten said that there was too much outside interference in Pakistan cricket. According to him, it becomes difficult for a coach to plan with the players and create the right environment when there is pressure and noise from outside all the time. He also said that when there is poor performance, the easiest target is the coach.
According to Kirsten, when the team does not do well, the first thought is to take action against the coach. Sometimes there is discussion of removing the coach, and sometimes there is an attempt to limit his role. He raised the question that if the coach is not to be allowed to work independently, then why was he appointed.
Sri Lanka’s new responsibility after Pakistan
After the end of his short and controversial tenure with Pakistan, Gary Kirsten has now got a new responsibility. He has recently been appointed the head coach of Sri Lankan men’s cricket team. His two-year tenure will start from April 15 and will continue till April 14, 2028. During this time, his biggest responsibility will be to prepare Sri Lanka for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
The Sri Lanka Cricket Board has also made it clear that Kirsten’s main role will be to strengthen the team for the 2027 World Cup campaign. Before this, he has also recently played the role of an advisor with Namibia Cricket in the T20 World Cup 2026.
Big name both as player and coach
Gary Kirsten is not only a successful coach but is also counted among the best batsmen of South Africa. In his international career from 1993 to 2004, he has scored more than 14 thousand runs including Test and ODI. He also has 21 Test centuries and 13 ODI centuries in his name.
