Rishikesh Mukherjee was born on 30 September 1922 in a Bengali Brahmin family in Kolkata. Mukherjee completed his education science subject and graduated in Chemistry from Calcutta University. But he was interested in films and he soon moved towards the film industry.

Initially, he acted in editing in films and gained experience by working as an editor with great directors like Bimal Roy. His editing work was well appreciated and gradually he moved towards direction.
