Rishikesh Mukherjee was born on 30 September 1922 in a Bengali Brahmin family in Kolkata. Mukherjee completed his education science subject and graduated in Chemistry from Calcutta University. But he was interested in films and he soon moved towards the film industry.
Initially, he acted in editing in films and gained experience by working as an editor with great directors like Bimal Roy. His editing work was well appreciated and gradually he moved towards direction.

His first film ‘Musafir’ came in 1957, but the real success came from the 1959 film ‘Anari’, which also won many Filmfare Awards. The special thing about Rishikesh Mukherjee’s films was that he used to put the simple stories of common people on the screen very beautifully.
His films such as ‘Anand’, ‘Chupke-Chupke’, ‘Guddi’, ‘Bavarchi’ and ‘Satyakam’ gave Hindi cinema new direction. These films are still alive in the hearts of people because they get a glimpse of small happiness and sorrow of life.
Rishikesh Mukherjee also won several awards in his career. His film ‘Anari’ received five Filmfare Awards and he himself nominated the Filmfare Awards. The specialty of his films was that he used to explain to the audience as well as the truth of life.
Rishikesh introduced the stories of family, friendship, love and society very easily through his films. He considered cinema not only a means of entertainment, but a mirror of life. He said goodbye to this world on 27 August 2006, but the unique style of his films and his direction is still alive in Hindi cinema.
