People laugh, are surprised or shocked at the strange laws of many countries in the world, but there is one country where people become silent after hearing the reality. There even the most normal, most natural and most essential aspects of women’s life are tied in the chains of rules. Imagine, where mobile phones, TV, travel are all banned, and when even a basic need like menstruation is tied to the law, how will women survive?
Which country has such a strange law?
North Korea may appear small on the world map, but the terror and mystery of its laws are so big that everything becomes an international debate. Under Kim Jong Un’s rule, the government decides every day to day decision, what people will wear, what song they will listen to, what they will watch on which TV channel, even on which day they can laugh and on which day they cannot. This strange system also includes a law which is not even heard of in any modern country in the world, that is a complete ban on sanitary pads.
Sanitary napkins will not be available even in shops
In North Korea, sanitary napkins are not only not available in the market, but people are also prevented from using them. You will get everything from food to household items in the shops, but not a single pack of sanitary pads will be available. Even basic things like tampons and period panties are completely illegal in the country.
So what do women do?
Amidst the strict policies of the government, women have again adopted old methods. Here women make cloth pads, which are washed and used again and again. This method is decades old, but compulsion has again made it a part of life. Many women prepare reusable cloth at home by sewing several layers of cotton cloth. It is not easy to dry them in the sun, because hanging such clothes in the open outside the house is also considered socially wrong.
In North Korea, taking care of women’s periods is considered a private duty, there is no government support, no health products, no awareness about menstruation. It is said that the government has considered sanitary items as foreign luxury, hence both their import and sale has been banned.
