A big initiative towards improving and modernizing health services in India has started from Greater Noida. The country’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI) clinic has been started in the Government Institute of Medical Sciences (JIMS) located here. This clinic will not only make treatment methods more precise but will also help in developing treatment solutions specifically designed for Indian patients.
Till now, most of the research and techniques that have been used for treatment in India are based on data from western countries. Because the lifestyle, eating habits, genetic make-up and disease patterns of the people there are different from the Indian people, hence sometimes the treatment is not as effective. With the aim of overcoming this deficiency, this AI Clinic has been started in JIMS.
What is AI Clinic and why is it special?
AI Clinic is a platform where Artificial Intelligence based technologies will be linked with health services. In this clinic, real data of hospitals will be made available to startups and researchers, so that they can develop new technologies and better methods of treatment based on the same data.
This data will include important information like disease pattern of patients, genetic history, response to treatment, medical imaging reports. By studying this information, the AI system will be able to understand how the treatment of a particular disease can be more effective in Indian patients.
Will technology replace doctors?
The purpose of AI Clinic is not to replace doctors, but to help them. AI technology will help doctors take better decisions. Like understanding medical reports quickly and accurately, early identification of diseases, suggesting right treatment options, simplifying clinical workflow. AI based solutions will be developed and tested first under the supervision and guidance of doctors. These will be implemented in government hospitals only after getting full and proper approval.
Big opportunity for startups and youth
Health tech startups will benefit greatly from this AI clinic. Till now the data of government hospitals was not easily available to startups, but through this initiative institutions like AIIMS, JIMS will be able to share the data.
Startups will be provided technical support, expert guidance and testing facilities through JIMS’s incubation center located in Greater Noida. IITs, NITs and private colleges will also join this clinic and take it forward with their technical expertise. Special caution will be taken regarding the security and confidentiality of patients’ data. A monitoring committee and a team of AI experts will examine all the proposals. Only those innovations will be taken forward which are practical, safe and in the interest of patients.
When will the physical launch happen?
According to Brigadier Dr. Rakesh Gupta, Director of JIMS, AI clinics are the need of the hour, so that new technologies can reach patients and doctors directly. The physical launch of this clinic will be done on January 6. Earlier, its online launch was done by Dr. Sujata Chaudhary, Additional Director General of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
