Mohammad Kaif Commented On Shubman Gill Dropped From T20Is Team: Former Indian cricket team player Mohammad Kaif has criticized the strategy made by the selection committee headed by Ajit Agarkar for the selection of the Indian team in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. Mohammad Kaif said on his YouTube channel, ‘It was not necessary to bring Shubman Gill back into the T20 International team. India had better options for this format. It was a mistake on the part of the selectors to bring back Gill. Due to this decision, the Indian T20 International team went back by two to three months. Kaif also criticized the selectors’ decision to make Shubman Gill the vice-captain of T20 International by taking the vice-captaincy from Akshar Patel. He said, ‘Akshar has been made the vice-captain again, but due to the change he lost the important months which he could have used to improve his leadership skills by working with Suryakumar before the World Cup. If Akshar had remained vice-captain, he would have been a part of the team meetings, and he would have got time to work on his leadership. Suppose Surya gets injured, then if Akshar had two to three months as vice-captain, he would have known more about his team and players. If he had to be captain, he would have been better prepared, so that opportunity was snatched away from him.
The decision to drop Shubman Gill was taken late
Kaif said that the decision to drop Shubman Gill from the T20 International team was right, but it was taken late. This shows the poor strategy of the selectors. Time has been wasted in the name of strategy. Before Asia Cup 2025, Shubman Gill was made the vice-captain in T20 International. In place of Sanju Samson, Gill was made to open the innings along with Abhishek Sharma. Gill did not live up to the trust of the selectors and ultimately he was dropped from the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 team and in his place Ishan Kishan was brought back into the team and Akshar Patel was again made the vice-captain.
