In Bhutan, if a person does not have land to build his house or does not have the ability to buy it, all he has to do is go to the king. The king gives free land to that person so that he can build his house and earn a living for his family. This means that no one remains homeless in Bhutan.
Education, health and treatment are completely free in Bhutan. School and college tuition fees are not charged. The government also provides scholarships for higher education and even helps in studying abroad if needed. All government hospitals and health centers provide free treatment and medicines. For serious diseases, the government also bears the cost of treatment abroad. Because of this, Bhutanese people live a healthy and happy life.
In Bhutan, a certain amount of electricity is provided free of charge to small families and people in rural areas. Farmers get subsidy on seeds, fertilizers and farming equipment. The resources required for farming are either free or at very low cost. Thus, no one in Bhutan suffers from poverty or hunger.
Bhutanese people follow their culture and traditions with great pride. Here men wear knee-length dress Ghos and women wear long dress Kiras. Common people wear white scarves, while noble people and monks wear yellow scarves. In Bhutan, foreign influences are closely monitored to preserve culture and tradition.
Bhutan is ahead in environmental protection. There is a ban on plastic bags here since 1999. Tobacco is almost illegal. 60 percent of the country should always be in forest. In 2015, a world record was created by planting 50,000 trees in one hour. Bhutan deliberately avoids large-scale tourism so that its natural and cultural heritage is protected.
Gross National Happiness Committee was formed in Bhutan in 2008. In the census, people are asked whether they are happy with their life or not. Most people in Bhutan follow Buddhism, which teaches respect for all living beings.
