The Indian Nasena includes two advanced Nilgiri -class stealth guided missile frigate on Tuesday (August 26, 2025). Udayagiri and Himgiri Warship were officially inducted into the Navy during an event in Visakhapatnam led by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. This has increased India’s strength in the sea. With this, now India has a three-frigate squadron.
Udayagiri and Himgiri are the new version of the ‘Project 17 (Shivalik)’ category, with significant improvements in stealth (able to escape the radar), weapons and sensor systems. Udayagiri is the second ship of Project 17A Waraship and is built by Majhgaon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai. Himgiri has been built by the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata under the P-17A project.

After joining the Navy, both these warships will join the eastern fleet, which will further strengthen the country’s ability to protect its marine interests in the Indian Ocean region.

On this occasion, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said, “Both INS Himgiri and Udayagiri are modern warships that have been built indigenously. I have been told that these warships have many advanced capabilities. They can be installed by long distance surface missiles, supersonic BrahMos missiles, indigenous rocket launchers, tarpaido lonchar, tarpaido lonchar and fire control system. There will be a game-changer in dangerous campaigns in the sea. “
As soon as these two Waraships join the Indian Navy, India will now be able to give more strong answers to Pakistan and China in the sea. One after the other, the naval strength has increased due to indigenous warship, which is upset with both the neighbors of India.
