Times Higher Education (THE) has released the World University Rankings by Subject 2026, this ranking evaluates universities around the world on the basis of their performance in different subjects. This time too, the dominance of America and Britain remained intact, while universities from Asia like China, Singapore and Japan registered a strong presence. This ranking has once again brought an opportunity for introspection for India, because its presence in the top 100 appeared to be very limited.
India’s performance: Big questions on limited presence
In the 2026 subject ranking of THE, only the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru has been able to make it to the top 100 from India. The special thing is that IISc has got this place in an important and fast growing subject like Computer Science. Apart from this, no Indian university could be included in the top 100 in any subject. This ranking clearly indicates that there is no dearth of talent and institutions in India, but to achieve the top rank at the global level, the quality of research, international collaboration and connectivity with the industry will have to be further strengthened. Only when there is continuous and concrete improvement in these areas, Indian universities will be able to make a permanent place in the top list of the world.
If we look further in Computer Science itself, after IISc, Amity University has been ranked in the range of 251–300 and Jamia Millia Islamia has been ranked in the range of 301–400.
Why is India lagging behind in research and international influence?
According to the report, Indian universities lag behind China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea on important parameters like research quality, high-impact publications and international citations. Although India has improved in the field of research output and international collaboration in recent years, this progress is not yet strong enough to consistently make it to the top 50 or top 20. Experts believe that limited funding, lack of industry-academia collaboration and low participation in global research networks have affected India’s ranking. Affects.
The dominance of America and Britain continues
The dominance of America and Britain is clearly visible in THE Ranking 2026. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has been considered the most influential institute in the world. MIT has secured the first position in all three subjects – Arts and Humanities, Business and Economics and Social Sciences. American universities remained on top in 8 out of 11 subjects, while Britain recorded the first position in 3 subjects including Psychology. Cambridge University has achieved the number one position in Psychology for the first time since 2022.
Rise of China, changing picture of Asia
China’s performance in this year’s ranking has been very strong. China has secured a total of 7 positions within the top 10 across all subjects, which is a big jump compared to last year. Peking University has entered the top 10 in computer science for the first time, while Tsinghua University has entered the top 10 in physics. This is an indication that the center of research and innovation in Asia is changing rapidly.
How are rankings decided?
THE ranking is prepared on the basis of 18 parameters in 11 subjects. These include parameters like quality of teaching, research, research citation, international outlook and industry income, the total score of which determines the final ranking.
