Women Unemployment Rate in India: We all know more or less about the role of women in society. The revelations of the Periodic Labor Force Survey (PLFS) on Wednesday show that the unemployment rate for people aged 15 years and above increased marginally in September, but for women it reached its highest level in three months.

PLFS data shows that the unemployment rate for people aged 15 years and above increased from 5.1 percent in August to 5.2 percent in September after declining in the last two months. At the same time, for all age groups this rate increased from 5.1 percent in August to a three-month high level of 5.3 percent.

How is the situation in the villages?

The unemployment rate for people aged 15 years and above in rural areas increased from 4.3 percent in August to a three-month high of 4.6 percent in September. At the same time, in urban areas this rate increased from 6.7 percent in August to 6.8 percent. In rural areas, the unemployment rate for men increased from 4.5 percent in August to 4.7 percent in September, while for women it increased from 4 percent in August to 4.3 percent. In urban areas, the unemployment rate for women increased from 8.9 percent in August to 9.3 percent in September, while for men it increased from 5.9 percent to 6 percent.

Improvement visible in labor participation

The data showed that the overall labor force participation rate (LFPR) for people aged 15 years and above continued to increase for the third consecutive month, from 54.2 percent in June 2025 to 55.3 percent in September, which is a five-month high. LFPR in rural areas increased from 56.1 percent in June 2025 to 57.4 percent in September. LFPR in urban areas remained unchanged at 50.9 percent compared to August. In September, the LFPR for women aged 15 years and above was 34.1 percent, which is the highest level since May 2025.
