Rohit Sharma attributed his success in the recently concluded ODI series against Australia to preparation done ‘in his own way’ which stemmed from the realization that there are more aspects to life than being professionally committed.
Rohit scored an unbeaten 121 runs in the third and final ODI here to lead India to a nine-wicket win over Australia, thereby saving the visiting team from a clean sweep. Australia won the three-match series 2-1.
Rohit told the BCCI website, “Ever since I started playing, I never had four to five months to prepare for any series, so I wanted to utilize it. I wanted to do things my own way, on my own terms and it was really good for me because I understood what I needed to do for the rest of my career.
Rohit was named Man of the Match and Man of the Series against Australia in May, despite playing competitive cricket for the first time after IPL 2025.
Rohit said, “It was important to utilize that time because as I said, I never had that much time before and I had prepared well at home. There is a difference between the conditions here and back home but I have been here many times so it was just about getting into that rhythm.
“So I give a lot of credit to the way I prepared before coming here,” he said. Gave myself lots of time. It was very important because sometimes you need to understand that there is a lot more to do in life apart from what you do professionally but I had a lot of time and so I used it.
Rohit cherished his match-winning partnership with his long-time partner Virat Kohli. He said, “Obviously with two new balls it was a bit challenging. It was a little difficult to play in the beginning but we knew that once the shine of the ball went off, it would become a little easier.
Rohit said, “Great partnership (with Kohli) after a long time.” I think we haven’t made a 100-run partnership for a long time. From a team perspective, it was good to have this partnership considering our situation at the time.
He said, “(Shubman) Gill got out a little early and we knew that with the absence of (injured) Shreyas Iyer, there was additional responsibility on the batsmen. We enjoyed every moment we spent on the field, we talked a lot between us.
Rohit said, “We have played a lot of cricket together. We understand each other well. We both have a lot of experience between us and we used it well.
