There is not a single child in 8 thousand schools across the country, yet more than 20 thousand teachers are deployed; Revealed in the report

A shocking report has come out raising questions on the education system of the country. According to the recently released UDISE report of the Ministry of Education, there are about 7,993 schools in India where not a single student has been enrolled in the academic session 2024–25. That means these schools are completely empty, there are no students, and no studies are taking place, but still 20,817 teachers are working there.

According to the report, West Bengal has the highest number of schools with zero enrollment in the country. There is not a single student in 3,812 schools, yet 17,965 teachers are working in these schools. Telangana is second after West Bengal, where there are 1,016 teachers in 2,245 schools. Madhya Pradesh is in third place, where there are 463 schools in which there is not a single student but 223 teachers are posted. 81 schools in Uttar Pradesh are also included in this list.

States started merger of schools

To deal with such a situation, many states have now started merger of schools. This means that schools which have very less or no number of students are being merged with nearby schools. Its objective is to make better use of teachers and resources so that government expenditure does not go waste.

Improvement compared to last year

According to the report, the situation has improved somewhat this year compared to last year. In 2023-24, there were 12,954 schools across the country where there were no students, while in 2024-25 this number came down to 7,993. That means a decline of about 38 percent has been recorded.

There is not a single ’empty school’ in these states

Many states have completely got rid of this problem. There is no longer a single zero-enrolment school left in states like Haryana, Maharashtra, Goa, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura.

Similarly, in union territories like Delhi, Puducherry, Lakshadweep, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Daman and Diu, students have now been enrolled in all the schools.

Education Ministry’s clarification

A senior official of the Education Ministry said that school education is a state subject. All states have been advised to merge schools with zero enrollment so that staff and resources can be utilized properly. Some states have also taken concrete steps in this direction.
