There may be an announcement in the budget to build girls hostels in 800 districts, know how big the education budget will be.

The central government is preparing for a big step to strengthen the education system of the country. There may be many important announcements regarding the education sector in Budget 2026, of which the most discussed is the plan to build girls hostels in 800 districts. It is believed that this time in the education budget, special emphasis will be given to furthering the education of daughters.

The budget session 2026 of the Indian Parliament has started from 28 January. Before the budget session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation in the Parliament complex. After this, on January 29, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Economic Survey 2025-26 in the Parliament. Now everyone’s eyes are on the general budget, in which everyone is keeping an eye on what will be special regarding education. Like every year, this time too the education sector has high expectations from the budget. The government seems to be preparing to do something big especially for the daughters living in rural and remote areas.

Girls hostel scheme in 800 districts

The Central Government believes that even today lakhs of girls in the country leave studies just because colleges or universities are too far from their homes. Due to lack of safe living arrangements, parents are afraid of sending their daughters out. To end this problem, the government is working on a plan to build girls hostels in all 800 districts.

The Education Ministry has sent the proposal of this scheme to the Finance Ministry. If everything goes according to plan, its official announcement can be made in Budget 2026. Under this scheme, hostels equipped with modern facilities will be built in every district, so that girls can pursue higher education without any worries.

Government’s special emphasis on daughters’ education

The government’s aim is to rapidly increase the participation of girls in higher education in the country. This is why the Education Ministry is working on increasing the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) to 50 percent. Currently, this figure is quite low in many states, especially in rural areas.

An important meeting of Chief Secretaries of all the states is going to be held in Delhi between 26 to 28 December. In this meeting, there will be detailed discussion on increasing GER, preventing dropouts and making education more accessible. It is believed that the Girls Hostel Scheme will be prominently included in the agenda of this meeting.

Preparation to prevent dropout

Government figures show that a large number of students, especially girls, leave studies after 12th. Distance, security and economic reasons are the major reasons behind this. The government wants these reasons to be eliminated gradually.

The construction of girls hostel will directly benefit those students who want to study in big cities from villages or small towns. Providing safe and affordable accommodation will make it easier for them to go to college.

College in two shifts, online studies also discussed

Not just hostels, the government is also considering many other options to improve education. States have been asked to prepare their own plans to increase GER. This also includes the possibility of running classes in colleges in two shifts, so that more and more students can get admission.

How much can the education budget be?

If we talk about the last budget, the total budget allocation for the Education Ministry was Rs 1,28,650 crore. Which was 6.22% more than 2024-25. This time also it is being speculated that it will increase.
