The Washington Post, one of the world’s leading media organizations, has announced mass layoffs on Wednesday (February 4, 2026). This organization of Jeff Bezos decided to close its existing sports desk and also cut down on international reporting. One-third of the company’s employees were affected by this layoff.
In an interview with Fox News, The Washington Post said, ‘Today we are taking many decisive steps for our future. We have taken this decision to provide specialized journalism and to further improve our position. This will give a distinct identity to our institute and attract our users.
Retired executive editor angry over retrenchment
Speaking to The Wrap, Mary Baron, retired executive editor of the Washington Post, said, ‘This decision is one of the darkest days in the history of this institution. This will seriously affect the mission of The Washington Post. This will further reduce the number of talented and courageous employees. People around the world will be deprived of our on-the-ground reporting, which is needed today more than ever.
Last week, The Washington Post employees appealed to Jeff Bezos to reconsider possible layoffs. The Washington Post Guild opposed further layoffs, saying it would weaken the newspaper. The guild said, ‘This move by the institute will alienate readers and harm its mission of holding power accountable.’
New Delhi Bureau Chief was also fired from the job
Pranshu Verma, New Delhi Bureau Chief of The Washington Post, is also among those who were fired from the job. He posted on X and wrote, ‘I am very sad to inform that I have been fired from The Washington Post. It feels very bad to know that many of my talented friends have also left. It was a privilege for me to work here for the last four years. It was an honor for me to work as the New Delhi Bureau Chief of the newspaper.
Employees covering international were fired
Ishaan Tharoor, global affairs columnist of The Washington Post, was also fired from his job. He said, ‘Today I have been fired from The Washington Post. Also, most of the international staff and many of my other wonderful colleagues were also laid off. I am deeply saddened for our newsroom and especially for the wonderful journalists who have worked for The Washington Post internationally. Editor and reporter who has been my friend and colleague for almost 12 years. It was an honor for me to work with him.
