Glucesterreshire’s legendary bowler Tom Smith announced his retirement from professional cricket with the end of his team’s campaign in the T20 blast. His last match will be his last match against Sussex Sharks in the Vitality Blast at Cheltenham College.
Tom Smith played a key role in winning the team’s Royal London ODI Cup in 2015 and the T20 blast in the last season. He is second in the list of bowlers taking the most wickets in T20 for the club.
Tom Smith started his career 12 years ago with a practice match against Australia ‘A’. He has taken 301 wickets so far in all formats for the club. He has 154 wickets in T20.
In a letter written for the club’s website, Smith wrote, “It seems that this is the right time. In the last few seasons, I have got the privilege of playing as well as coaching career and now I am ready to focus my full attention on it.”
He wrote, “Thank you Glustershair for believing in me. The last 13 seasons have been extremely special for both me and my family. From transporting the club to Division One to winning two White-Ball Trophy, these have been my best days on the cricket field.”
Glucestershire’s head coach Mark Ellen congratulated Smith on her fully coaching role. Ellen said, “Tom has played more than 50 first class matches, but he has done well in white-ball cricket.”
He said, “Inaugurating a new chapter in coaching, we are confident that he will move forward with the same energy and skills that has defined his sports career. He has already made a lot of progress in the field. We will never forget his contribution to Glossarshire cricket.”
