Lahore, Pakistan has remained the most polluted city in the world for the last three days, where the air quality has fallen to dangerous levels. The average air quality index (AQI) of the city has reached 412, in view of this, health warnings have been issued and action is being taken on pollution sources.
According to Dawn report, Lower Mall was the worst affected area, whose AQI was 680. It was followed by Iqbal Town (577), Syed Maratib Ali Road (543), Shadman (507), Punjab University Area (506) and Shalimar (495). Environmental experts have appealed to people to wear masks while going out in the morning and evening. Whereas in Delhi-NCR the average AQI remains around 200.
Where in Pakistan’s Punjab is alert issued?
The concentration of PM2.5 in Lahore’s air is many times higher than the global safety limit, increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases as well as other serious health problems. Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a high alert in the eastern districts of the province including Lahore, Gujranwala, Sheikhpura, Kasur, Nankana Sahib, Faisalabad, Multan, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan and Khanpur.
Smog will increase from November to mid December
PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia warned that the intensity of smog is expected to increase from November to mid-December. PDMA has directed all commissioners and deputy commissioners to ensure implementation of government measures to combat smog.
What did Minister Maryam Aurangzeb say?
Senior Punjab Minister Maryam Aurangzeb said that 9 departments are running a large-scale campaign against smog. According to Dawn report, the minister said that the Environment Protection Force and departments are fully active, all regional squads are present in the field and apart from issuing live reports, the brick kilns are being monitored through drones.
