Modinagar city of Ghaziabad district adjacent to Delhi was established in the name of Lalit Modi’s grandfather Gujarmal Modi. Gujarmal Modi was counted among the biggest businessmen of the country and is considered the founder of Modi Group. Whereas Gujarmal Modi was born on 9 August 1902. Leaving his studies midway, he took over the business with his father and in the year 1933, along with his brother Kedarnath Modi, he laid the foundation of Modi Group. During this period, he established the industrial city Modinagar which later became a major industrial hub of North India. Even during the British rule, Gujarmal Modi had special influence. Due to his business and social contributions, he was given the title of ‘Raibahadur’. Before his death on January 22, 1976, his group was counted among the seven largest business groups in the country.

The business started by Gujarmal Modi continued to grow with time. The business built by him included many companies related to sugar mill, vegetable, rubber, manufacturing and industrial production.
