Angel Chakma, a 24-year-old post graduate student from Tripura, was stabbed to death on Friday (December 26, 2025) in Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand. The incident has been termed as an alleged racial attack, which has given rise to a sharp political controversy. Meanwhile, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has also given his reaction on this incident. He has termed the murder of the Tripura student as a national disgrace.

Reacting strongly to the death of a Tripura student, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor shared a post on social media platform X on Monday (December 29, 2025). He linked this crime to deep social prejudices. He said that this barbaric murder in Uttarakhand is not just a tragedy, but it is a national disgrace.

He said, ‘A young man from Tripura, who was proudly Indian, was subjected to racial abuses, inhumanely insulted with words like Chinese and Momo and finally murdered. This was not an isolated incident of violence, it is the result of ignorance, prejudice and the failure of our society to recognize and respect our own diversity.

Describing this incident as a worrying trend, the Congress leader said, ‘It is shocking and extremely shameful that racism is on the rise in North India, which is often hidden behind light jokes or institutional neglect.’ He said that discrimination against the people of north-eastern states hurts the basic concept of India. The Northeast, with its rich cultures, languages and traditions, is not a distant part of Indian identity, but its core. Yet people from this area often face racial profiling, exclusion and abuse. This should stop now.
Demanding accountability beyond the courts, Tharoor said, ‘We have to demand justice for Aniel (Angel Chakma) not just in the courts, but also in the conscience of the nation. His death should not be reduced to a statistic or a total of headline moments.
