Before the start of IPL 2026, former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa has given a sharp reaction to the auction process of the league. Uthappa has clearly said that the current auction system is now outdated and needs change. According to him, this process of buying players through bidding does not seem respectable and at times it feels as if human beings are being sold like commodities.
Uthappa has described the IPL auction system as “outdated” and “incomprehensible”. He says that the way players go “under the hammer” does not present a true picture of the game and the dignity of the players. He agreed that this model has been running for a long time, but now the time has come to bring changes in this model according to the new era.
Advocacy of draft system
The former wicketkeeper-batsman believes that the draft system should now be implemented in the IPL like the American sports league. According to Uthappa, the process of making a team through the draft system can be more systematic, strategic and balanced. Like now, the bidding war will not be decided solely on the basis of money, rather the franchises will be able to select players with a better plan.
He also suggested that there should be a system of trade windows open throughout the year. This will make it easier for teams to exchange players as per their need. Uthappa believes that with this, player management will also become better.
Debate over IPL auction intensifies again
IPL auction has always been a topic of discussion. Many people find it exciting, while some have been raising questions on its methodology. This statement of Robin Uthappa has once again fueled the debate whether the world’s biggest T20 league now needs to move beyond the auction model.
