There are many countries in the world where the water crisis is increasing, but there is one country which has made the salt water of the sea its biggest strength. So much sweet water is prepared here every day that the needs of many countries are met for the whole year. Despite having no rivers, no lakes and very little rainfall, this country has gone far ahead of the world in water production. After all how? How are new records made every day? The whole story is shocking.

Which country produces the most sweet water?

Water shortage is a big challenge for the whole world, but Saudi Arabia has turned this challenge into an opportunity. In a country where there are no natural rivers, rainfall is very less and underground water is continuously depleting, the same country has become the world’s largest freshwater production centre. Saudi Arabia makes such records every day, which many countries of the world are not able to achieve even in a year.

World number-1 country in making sea water sweet

Saudi Arabia has a vast coastline and this coastline has made the country the world leader in the field of water. In the Gulf region, huge factory-like desalination plants run 24 hours a day, where billions of liters of sea water is filtered and made drinkable. According to an estimate, Saudi Arabia alone handles about 20% of the world’s total desalination capacity.

How much water is cleaned every day?

Saudi Arabia produces about 7 million cubic meters of fresh water every day. In comparison, many Asian and African countries are not able to produce that much water even in a year. The geographical location of Saudi Arabia is very challenging. There are no rivers in the entire country, rainfall is hardly 100-200 mm in a year. Therefore the temperature there reaches 50°C.

Modern technology has a big role in defeating these situations. De-salination plants remove salt from sea water, making it potable and delivering it through pipes and water tankers to cities, homes and industries.

The world’s largest water transport system

The capital Riyadh is hundreds of kilometers away from the sea. To deliver water here, Saudi Arabia has built the world’s longest water pipeline system. Fresh water is pumped from the coast to the highlands of Riyadh, which requires huge energy. In many areas, water is still supplied to the underground tank of the house through tankers.

How is so much water created?

Mainly two techniques are used-

RO (Reverse Osmosis)- Sea water is sweetened by filtering it through membranes.

Thermal desalination- Steam is created by heating water, then cooling it to create sweet water. The world’s latest and largest RO plants are present in Saudi only.

Fresh water costs more than petrol!

Everyone is shocked to know that water obtained from de-salination is actually costlier than petrol. But the government makes water cheaper by giving subsidy, so that it can be easily supplied to the people.
