You must have heard about different types of roads in the world. Somewhere there is the longest road, somewhere there is a road connecting the highest mountains. Some roads are famous for their beauty, while others are famous for their dangerous turns and harsh weather. But have you ever heard of a road under which the bones of thousands and lakhs of humans are buried? There is a road in the world which is not only made of stone, soil and asphalt, but also has human bones mixed in it. That is why this road is called Road of Bones. Hearing this name sends shivers through the body, but the story behind it is even more scary than this. So let us know where the Road of Bones is a road made of human bones and what is its horrifying history.
Where is this road?
This road is located in a very remote and cold area of Russia. Actually it is a long highway named Kolyma Highway. It is approximately 2,025 kilometers long. This part of Russia is so cold that snow remains here for many months of the year. The paths often disappear in a thick layer of white snow.
Why are human bones found on the road?
Even today, human bones and skeletons are found at many places on this highway. This sounds like something from a horror movie, but it is completely true. It is said that vehicles used to slip due to accumulation of snow on the road. Technology was less at that time, so human bones were mixed with stones and sand to strengthen the road. These bones belonged to thousands of laborers and prisoners who died during the construction of this highway. It is believed that between 2.5 lakh to 10 lakh people died during the construction of this road. Their blood, their sweat and their bones are all buried in this road. This is the reason why even today the world looks at this highway with both respect and fear.
Why is it called Road of Bones?
This road was constructed during the time of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin. When it began in the 1930s, lakhs of prisoners were sent to this area for bonded labour. The working conditions were so terrible that it is said that the prisoner who came here never returned. The winter was so harsh that the temperature often dropped below -50 degrees. Neither proper food, nor shelter, nor clothes. People who died while working did not even get time to bury their bodies. They were buried directly under the road. For this reason, this highway is considered to be built on the bones of lakhs of dead people. Today vehicles move on the Kolyma Highway. People also see it as Adventure Road.
