India gained independence from British rule on 15 August 1947, the British ruled India for nearly 200 years and when India got independence after long struggles, this day was historic and very special. But at the time of independence, some indigenous princely states and provinces of India were merged into India after independence. Portuguese governance
Please tell that at the time of independence, some areas like Goa, Daman and Diu remained under Portuguese rule. Goa, which is a popular tourist destination of India today, remained in the possession of Portuguese till 1961. In 1510, Goa was captured by the Portuguese. For nearly 450 years, the Portuguese ruled Goa, Daman and Diu. When India became independent in 1947, the Portuguese flag was waving in Goa. The Government of India demanded Portugal to hand over Goa but Portuguese ruler Antonio Salazar turned down it.
Goa gets independence after 14 years
When diplomacy and agitation failed, the Government of India decided to intervene. ‘Operation Vijay’ started on 18 December 1961. The Indian Army, Navy and Air Force jointly attacked the Portuguese bases. After this, on 19 December 1961, Portuguese Governor General Manuel Antonio Vasalo E Silva signed the documents of surrender and thus 14 years later India got its right to Goa.
