An American Hindu organization has requested Vice President JD Vance to join Hindu religion also. The organization’s request comes after Vance commented that his wife Usha had encouraged him to reconnect with his religion a few years ago. The US Vice President is facing criticism for his comments about interfaith marriage at the ‘Turning Point USA’ (TPUSA) event held at the University of Mississippi on Wednesday.
In fact, a South Asian woman at the event asked Vance questions about his religion and his inter-religious marriage with Usha, to which the Vice President said that he hoped that Usha, who grew up in a Hindu family, was influenced to some extent by the same things that had influenced him by the church.
HAF requested the US Vice President
Hitting back at his critics, Vance said on Friday (October 31, 2025) that it was his wife who encouraged him to reconnect with Christianity. He said, ‘As I said in TPUSA, my wife is the most amazing blessing of my life. He himself encouraged me to reconnect with my religion many years ago.
Responding to Vance’s remarks, the Hindu American Foundation (HAF) in a statement on Friday urged the US Vice President to also connect with Hinduism. HAF said, ‘With respect to the Vice President, if your wife encouraged you to reconnect with your religion, would you in turn take positive initiative and reconnect with Hinduism as well?’
HAF criticized Vance’s supporters
The organization said, ‘In Hinduism, it is not desired that your spouse also sees things in the same way as you do in the context of religion.’ It said that as a public figure and Vice President, Vance should recognize the right of Hindus to practice their religion. HAF said, ‘You are the Vice President, it would be very appropriate for a public Christian person like you to recognize the positive impact of Hinduism on Hindus and their right to practice their religion.’
The organization also criticized some of Vance’s supporters for speaking out against religious freedom. HAF said, ‘Some of the most vocal voices among your supporters do not actually believe that religious freedom, one of the core concepts upon which this nation was founded, should extend to Hindus.’
‘Everyone has the right to free will’
Vance told TPUSA on Wednesday that Usha goes to church with him most Sundays. He had said, ‘I told him, I have said this publicly and now I will say it in front of my 10,000 close friends that I think ultimately he is influenced by the same things that influenced me by the church? Yes, that’s what I honestly want, because I believe in the Christian gospel and I hope that eventually my wife will see it the same way.’
Vance had said, ‘If she doesn’t do this, God says that everyone has free will and so it is not a problem for me. This is something that you solve together with your friends, your family and the person you love.
‘Wife has no intention of converting’
However, on Friday the Vice President clarified that his wife has no intention of converting. She said, ‘She is not a Christian and has no intention of converting, but like many people in interfaith marriages or any interfaith relationship, I hope that one day she too will be able to see things the way I do. Despite this, I will continue to love her and talk to her about faith, life and everything else, because she is my wife.
