The World Para Athletics Championship (WPAC) continues at the Jawaharlal Nehru (JLN) Stadium in New Delhi. Meanwhile, a case of stray dog attack has come to light from the sports stadium. During the practice of the game on the morning of 3 October, two foreign coaches and a security guard were attacked by stray dogs.
Japanese fencing coach Meico Okumatsu and Kenya’s sprints coach Dennis Margia Mawanjo were bitten by dogs on the warm -up track, while a guard was also attacked. These incidents took place within just 30 minutes, causing serious concern between the players and the organizers about safety.
How did the attack?
At around 9:18 in the morning, Japan coach Okumatsu was monitoring her player’s practice, when the dog bitten him on the left foot calf. His wounds were deep, which were immediately treated and later given anti-rebij vaccine, immunoglobulin injection and tetanus at Safdarjung Hospital. The medical report said that the wounds had to be stitched.
The second incident took place at 9:42 pm when Mawanjo was helping his player in 200m warmup. The dog bitten his right leg. He also received treatment under the anti-rebbit protocol. Security guard was also attacked during this period.
Constant attacks and disclosures
Sources in the organizing committee said that this was the fifth dog attack during this championship. Earlier, dogs, volunteers and stadium officials had attacked the dogs, but the case was suppressed. This time the incidents became public due to the involvement of foreign coaches. It was also written in the WhatsApp group of the committee-“Three dogs byte in 30 minutes. Japan, Kenya and Security Guards. Please take out the dogs. Now the situation is very worrying.”
Cleaning and increasing concern of organizers
The WPAC organizing committee issued a statement saying that the root of this problem is among those who feed stray dogs near the stadium. The committee said that on 21 August 2025, a letter was written to the MCD requesting the removal of dogs and the campus was also evacuated before the championship started. Despite this, they returned again by people feeding dogs continuously. According to the Times of India, now the stadium and the surrounding areas have been re -confined and security has been increased.
Recently, the case of stray dogs is in discussion and now such attacks are once again making this problem more serious. According to government data, in 2024, 37.17 lakh dog byte cases were registered across the country, ie an average of 10,000 cases on an average. At the same time, the report of the World Health Organization (WHO) states that in 2022, 305 people died of rabies in India.
