Early Signs Of Thyroid In Women: The numbers in your blood report tell a lot. After routine health checkup, a line is often seen, TSH slightly increased, but T3 and T4 normal. Doctors call it borderline, the patient does not feel any special problem and the report gets buried in the file. But thyroid problems are becoming common in India. According to a multi-city study published in the Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism in 2014, almost 1 in every 10 adults in the country is affected by hypothyroidism, while 8 to 9 percent people were found to have subclinical hypothyroidism. This figure is not trivial. Let us tell you in detail.

What is the meaning of border line?

Borderline thyroid means that TSH is slightly high or low, but T3 and T4 are within normal limits. It does not make noise like a disease, but indicates trouble. Expert Dr Vandana Boobhana told TOI that subclinical thyroid is quite common in India and people ignore it because the symptoms are mild. The real danger lies not in a single report, but in the trends changing over time.

Why is thyroid problem more prevalent in India?

Earlier the country was considered an iodine deficient area. The situation improved with the policy of adding iodine to salt, but changes in iodine levels can affect autoimmune diseases. Apart from this, autoimmune causes like Hashimoto thyroiditis, increasing age, pollution, obesity and stress also play an important role. Women are more affected than men. Planning for pregnancy, pregnancy, post-delivery changes and perimenopause, all these stages involve hormonal fluctuations, due to which the need for thyroid hormones increases. Uncontrolled thyroid during pregnancy can be risky for both mother and baby.

symptoms are not visible

The biggest problem is that many times there are no obvious symptoms. People consider mild fatigue, weight gain, hair loss or mood changes as normal. But subclinical hypothyroidism can turn into a disease over time, especially if thyroid antibodies are positive. Now the question arises, what to do in such a situation? If the doctor advises, get tested again after 6 to 12 weeks. If necessary, get thyroid antibody test done. Take iodine in balanced amounts, keep an eye on weight and menstrual cycle. Medication is not necessary in every borderline case, the decision is taken on the basis of age, symptoms and pregnancy status.
