Prison Cow Shelter: A new step has been taken to improve the mental health of prisoners in Tihar Jail. Now the prisoners will be given cow therapy to help them overcome loneliness and emotional stress. According to media reports, on Wednesday 19 November, Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena and Delhi Home Minister Ashish Sood inaugurated the new cow shelter built in the jail premises.
How many cows are there in the cowshed of Tihar?
At present 10 cows have been kept in Tihar Jail. Some were purchased and some were donated. The cow shed also has the capacity to house 10 more cows. According to the report, some prisoners coming from rural background may be given the responsibility of feeding fodder to the cows and taking care of them. Delhi Home Minister said that between January 1 and January 19, Delhi Police has received more than 25,000 cases related to stray and abandoned cows. He said that the number of cows in the capital is very high, but cow shelters are less.
He said, “The capacity of our existing cow shelters is 19,800, but more than 21,800 animals are staying in them. In such a situation, the initiative of Tihar Jail may appear small, but it is a far-thinking step.” He also added that this will increase the scope of care, protection and service of stray animals.
How will cow therapy help?

Regarding this, Home Minister Ashish Sood called it cow therapy and said that this step is a new ray of hope for those prisoners who struggle with loneliness. According to him, spending time with cows reduces the feeling of loneliness. Additionally, this therapy can also help prisoners overcome emotional stress, reduce conflicts and increase mutual compassion.
Jail Director General S. B. Of. Singh said that the inspiration for this idea came from such programs in the country and abroad, where efforts were made to improve the mental condition of prisoners with the help of animals.
Even in Tihar, there are many prisoners who neither get calls nor meet their families, due to which they go into stress and loneliness. Let us tell you that a similar experiment was conducted in the jails of Haryana in 2018 and animal-assisted programs are already running in some low-security jails of countries like Sweden.
