India US Trade Deal: No official announcement has been made yet regarding the ongoing trade talks between India and America. Meanwhile, a big statement has come out from America. Which has started a new discussion on this issue. US Commerce Secretary Howard Latnick has claimed that the trade deal between the two countries could not move forward because Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not call the then US President Donald Trump.
In an interview with American investor Chamath Palihapitiya on the All-In podcast, Latnik said that this was completely Trump’s deal and all the preparations were complete. According to him, all that was left was for Prime Minister Modi to call President Trump, but he was not comfortable doing so. Latnik also told that after this, America signed agreements with Indonesia, Philippines and Vietnam in the very next week and announced many deals.
There is a difference between Latnik’s claims and figures
There is a difference between these claims and figures of Latnik. He has said that the countries which completed tariff negotiations with America early, got the benefit of lower tariffs. But the order and rates of the agreements signed in July 2025 show a different picture.
That month, the US completed negotiations with the European Union, the United Kingdom, Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines and South Korea. For example, Vietnam was the first to end negotiations. Despite this, America has imposed the highest tariffs on its exports.
Trade deal between India and America
Trade deals have been negotiated between India and America at many levels. However, it has not yielded any positive results yet. Many high officials from India have also visited America for trade deals.
According to Latnik, India has adopted a tough stance towards America’s demands. Trump has said earlier also that the tariff deal between the two countries will be done easily. America has imposed 50 percent tariff on India. Talking about statistics, this number is highest compared to Asian countries.
