The US State Department said on Monday (January 12, 2026) that it has canceled more than one lakh visas so far. This includes about 8,000 student visas and about 2,500 special category visas. Those in the special category include those people who have had connections with criminal activities and had to appear before the law enforcement agencies of America. The US said it will continue to deport these criminals to keep its people safe.
Why did America cancel more than one lakh visas?
According to Fox News report, the number of visas canceled in the year 2025 is the highest till date. This figure is more than double the total visas canceled during the tenure of former President Joe Biden (year 2024). The US State Department said that most of the cases of visa cancellation were related to business and tourist travelers who had stayed in the country even after the visa period had expired.
Other visa revocation cases were related to arrests or charges related to drunken driving, assault, theft, child abuse, fraud and other crimes. The report also said that around 500 student visas were canceled due to cases of drug use and selling.

America became strict regarding issuing visas
This step has been taken at a time when the Trump administration is strictly making major changes in the US immigration system. Now, along with increased deportation proceedings, officials have implemented stricter criteria for issuing visas, indicating a tough stance on US national security.
