There has been a big turn in the relations between US President Donald Trump and Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro. Petro, whom Trump was targeting in harsh words till some time ago, has now had an hour-long conversation with him on the phone and preparations are also being made to meet him at the White House. This conversation took place on sensitive issues like drug smuggling, Venezuela and regional situation.
Talked on phone for about an hour
Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro told during a rally in Bogota on Wednesday that he and Trump spoke on the phone for about an hour. Petro said that Trump’s tone during the conversation was much softer than before.
No personal meeting, talks will be held in Washington
Petro said that he had invited Trump for a personal meeting, but the two leaders decided that the talks would be held in Washington. It is believed that this meeting may take place in the White House in the near future.
Proposal for meeting of three countries
In his speech, Petro also said that he has proposed a three-nation meeting between Colombia, the United States and Venezuela’s interim President Delsey Rodriguez. Petro said, ‘We want dialogue between the three countries, so that there is no such conflict within the society, as it once happened in Colombia.’
Trump said – it is an honor to talk to Petro
Trump issued a statement on social media saying it was a ‘great honor’ for him to talk to Petro. He wrote, ‘I appreciated his call and his tone and look forward to meeting him soon.’
Had given threat earlier, now changed stance
This conversation took place at a time when Petro had given open statements on America’s action regarding the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. On this, Trump had earlier said that US military action in Colombia ‘seems fine to him’. Earlier, Trump had even called Petro a ‘sick man’ and also made allegations regarding drug smuggling.
New understanding seen between the two leaders
It is clear from this sudden change in stance that despite the difference in ideology, both the leaders are ready to take steps according to their own benefit. There is no hesitation in joining hands even with the opponent if necessary.
Why is America important for Colombia
America is a very important partner for Colombia. The army there is fighting leftist guerrilla groups and drug smugglers. In the last 20 years, America has given aid worth about 14 billion dollars to Colombia.
