Trump kept threatening Canada, while Britain made a big deal with China, the British government announced

US President Donald Trump had threatened Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney that if he made any deal with China, 100 percent tariff would be imposed on US-Canadian products. After Trump’s threat, Carney has not announced any deal yet, but British PM Keir Starmer has made a big deal with China. The British government has also made an announcement regarding this.

Permission to go to China without visa

Announcing the deal on Thursday (January 29, 2026), the Starmer government said British citizens (tourism and business) will be allowed to visit China without a visa if traveling for less than 30 days. No date has been decided yet for the implementation of the visa agreement, but the government hopes that it will be implemented as soon as possible.

Britain agrees to reduce import duty on whiskey

The British Prime Minister’s Office, 10 Downing Street, said that his government wants to improve trade relations with China to promote economic development. Under this, it was also agreed to reduce the import duty on British whiskey from 10 percent to 5 percent. Keir Starmer said, ‘This step will make it easier for businesses to expand in China. Also, people will be able to go there for holidays even without a visa. Despite being one of the major economic powers in the world, we had been wanting to have our presence in China for a long time. Development and employment will get a boost in the country.

Starmer met Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Li Qiang during his visit to Beijing. Both countries are trying to improve their bilateral relations after some years of tense relations. In addition to agreeing a reduction in export duties on Scotch whiskey and visa-free travel to China for British travelers, the two sides are set to carry out the first joint UK-China law enforcement action.

Trump’s threat to Canada

The US President warned Canada that if it gets closer to China, it will swallow it. Donald Trump said last week that China would swallow Canada if Ottawa refuses to cooperate with Washington. Trump wrote, ‘Canada is against the Golden Dome being built over Greenland, even though the Golden Dome will protect Canada. Instead, Canada voted to trade with China, which will eat them up within a year.’
