US President Donald Trump praised the President of Liberia for his good English. During an important meeting with 5 West African leaders at the White House on 10 July 2025, Donald Trump praised Liberia President Joseph Bokai’s ways to speak English. He said how good and beautiful English you are speaking. Where did you learn to speak such a good English.
Trump’s comment spread anger and confusion throughout the African continent including Liberia. The opposition party Congress for Democratic Change-Course of Patriots, Fode Masacowio, described it as kind and derogatory. He said that this proves that the West does not take us seriously as African. President Trump treated very derogatory towards the African leader. Many people considered it an example of colonial mentality, where language is considered an indicator of power and validity.
Historical relations between Liberia and America
Relationships between Liberia and America are not ordinary but historically deep. Liberia was established with the help of free slaves who were brought from America to Africa. Even today, Liberia’s political system is on the lines of America. The roads here are on the lines of the American taxis and school buses. English is the official language of Liberia. In this context, Trump’s comment made Liberian citizens feel humiliated.
