US President Donald Trump is scheduled to have a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday (15 August 2025), on which the whole world is eyeing. Washington, Moscow, Europe, Ukraine and even India are eyeing this meeting. The result of this meeting will decide whether the America will get exemption from the additional tariff imposed by the US to buy Russian oil.
US Finance Minister Scott Besant warned that if things are not good in the meeting between Trump and Putin, then the tariff can be increased on India. Trump imposed 25 percent tariff on India to buy oil from Russia. A few days later, again 25 percent of additional tariffs were imposed on India, which is to be implemented from 27 August 2025. However, before meeting Trump, Putin has said that Trump is trying honestly to end the Russia-Ukraine war.
Donald Trump on Thursday (14 August 2025) claimed that Russia has agreed to negotiate due to the lack of Russian oil consumption from India due to the current tariff. Trump’s remarks are also an indication of the intention that along with affecting Moscow, economic pressure should be made on India.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said that despite tariff tension, India’s defense relations with Washington remain on track and this month an American delegation is going to visit New Delhi. Jaiswal said, “We hope that the US defense policy party will be in Delhi in August. The 21st edition of the joint military exercise exercise is also expected to be in Alaska later this month. “
India officials are keeping a close watch on the Alaska talks. An agreement between Trump and Putin may soften the US’s stance, while the breakdown of an agreement can tighten Washington’s trading stance, at the moment no one knows. This is the reason that India’s officials are keeping a close watch on the Alaska talks.
According to a report by Reuters, former US Ambassador Dan Fried said that this is a matter of concern, somewhere Trump Putin should come under the pretext of Putin and do not make any dangerous deal about Ukraine. However, he also said that there is every possibility that the Trump administration will understand that Putin is still playing with him. Russia has not given any indication that Trump can make a deal by ignoring Ukraine’s concerns. Zelansky says he wants to guarantee ceasefire and security first.
