US President Donald Trump has once again taken a shocking decision and announced to impose 10% additional tariff on products coming from Canada. This step has been implemented with immediate effect. This decision of Trump has come at a time when he had recently ended all the ongoing trade negotiations with Canada. The new controversy began with a Canadian political ad that distorted excerpts from a 1987 radio speech by former US President Ronald Reagan.
Posting on the social media site Truth Social, Trump accused Canada of fraud and presenting false information. He said that the Ontario government tried to discredit American policies by distorting Reagan’s words. Trump wrote that Canada has made a serious mistake, so I am imposing additional tariffs.
Reagan Foundation response
The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation condemned the ad, saying it used excerpts from Reagan’s speech without permission and misrepresented the message. The foundation said Reagan’s statement was about general trade policy, not about any particular individual.
Tariff war already underway
Trump has already imposed a 25% tariff on Canadian exports and a 10% duty on energy products. In response, Canada also imposed tariffs on American goods, including products such as orange juice, wine, coffee, apparel and steel. Now the new 10% tariff will further increase the already ongoing tension between the two countries.
Canada’s stance and future prospects
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney had recently said that Canada is ready to resume trade talks with America, but this new step by Trump may hinder that direction. Experts believe that if the tariff policy continues further, it may have a negative impact on the economy of both the countries.
