US President Donald Trump has once again expressed his desire for American occupation of Greenland. He reiterated his desire after a high-level meeting between American, Danish and Greenlandic officials on Wednesday (January 14, 2026). Describing Greenland as extremely important from the point of view of American security, he said that there will be some solution to this situation. However, a survey has revealed shocking figures as to how much support American citizens have for President Donald Trump’s desire to occupy Greenland.

Do Americans want US occupation of Greenland?

Reuters/Ipsos has conducted a survey on Friday (January 16, 2026) regarding this matter. According to which, less than one in five American citizens support Trump’s efforts to occupy Greenland and only one in 10 believes that the US military should use force for this.

The first question asked in the survey was whether American citizens support the attempt to occupy Greenland? In response to this question, 47 percent of Americans have answered no. At the same time, only 17 percent of the public supports the attempt to occupy Greenland. Whereas 36 percent people have given their response on Don’t know.

Second question: Should the US use military force to make Greenland and the Panama Canal its territory? On this only 10 percent Americans have answered yes. At the same time, 69% people have answered in the negative. Whereas 21 percent people have given their response as ‘don’t know’.

Third question: Should the United States use this policy to establish its dominance in Western Hemisphere affairs? According to the survey, 33 percent American citizens have agreed to this. At the same time, 41 percent people have opposed it, while 26 percent people have responded that they don’t know.

This survey has come to light after the US Army took military action on Venezuela and the arrest of its President Nicolas Maduro.

Greenland residents worried due to Trump’s stubbornness

According to Reuters report, there is an atmosphere of anxiety among the people of Greenland due to US President Donald Trump’s insistence on occupying Greenland. The island’s leaders have stressed their solidarity with Denmark.

Denmark said it is moving forward with plans for a larger and permanent presence in NATO to protect the world’s largest island. In this sequence, on Thursday (January 15, 2026), European countries have sent a limited number of their troops to Greenland.
