The statement of the country’s opposition leader has come after the US Army captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Saturday (January 3, 2025). He has called it the time of independence. Maria Corina Machado posted on social media that Venezuelans, the time for freedom has come.
Nobel Peace Prize winner Machado had been living in hiding since Maduro became president in July 2024. However, Maduro was accused of rigging in this election. Machado posted on Twitter that opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, who won the election, should immediately assume his constitutional duties as president.
Allegations of rigging in elections
According to the report of news agency Reuters, the National Electoral Council declared Maduro the winner in the 2024 elections but due to cyber attack, the exact results from the polling stations were not published. The opposition condemned election rigging involving its candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia. He stood for election at the last moment after Maria Corina Machado was disqualified.
Machado was last seen in public last month, when she emerged from hiding for 11 months and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in Norway. Venezuelan opposition leaders, the United States, and many other Western countries considered Maduro’s election victories in 2018 and 2024 fraudulent.
What did Trump say?
Donald Trump did not immediately endorse Machado, but told Fox News, “Well, we have to consider it right now. He has a vice president. I mean I don’t know what kind of election it was but you know Maduro’s election was a disgrace.”
Machado has also been criticized in Venezuela for his alliance with Trump. Gonzalez Urrutia posted on X on Saturday that this is a decisive moment, let everyone know that we are ready for the great campaign of rebuilding our nation.
