US President Donald Trump on Wednesday (6 August) announced a 50 percent tariff on India. Trump had earlier imposed 25 percent tariff, but then increased 25 percent. He is angry about India’s buying oil from Russia and had threatened many times, but Trump is adopting a double strategy. On the one hand, he is angry about the relationship with Russia with India and on the other side there is kindness on the European Union. The European Union also buys oil from Russia.
The White House said that this step has been taken towards making the sanctions imposed on Russia more effective due to Ukraine War. Trump had already announced a 25 percent fee on India last week, which is now being officially implemented. The order states that India is directly or indirectly importing oil from Russia, which the US considers its national security and foreign policy a threat.
What did Trump say about tariff through order
According to the order, “Under the corresponding laws, an additional fee of 25 percent will be imposed on goods imported from India in the US Customs sector.” This new fee will be applicable 21 days after the order is issued. However, the items that are in the sea route by that time and are cleared from the US customs before September 17 will be exempted from this fee.
European Union’s deep connection with Russia
Talk about the European Union, he has been continuously doing business with Russia. However, it is definitely that his business has decreased. Trump despite this is kind to the European Union. According to the report, its total trade with Russia has come down from 257.5 billion euros ($ 297.4 billion) in 2021 to 67.5 billion euros ($ 77.9 billion) in 2024.
Trump has imposed more tariffs on which countries
After Trump’s new order, India has joined the list of the most tariff countries. According to the NDTV report, Trump has also imposed 50 percent tariff on Brazil. Now both India and Brazil have reached the same place. Apart from these, Switzerland (39 percent), Canada and Iraq (35 percent), and China (30 percent) are also included in the list of countries with the highest tariffs.
