In the Bihar Assembly elections, there is a competition between the NDA and the Grand Alliance to woo the women vote bank. Both the alliances have made many promises to attract women voters in their favor. Talking about ticket distribution, both the alliances have not given much preference to women. RJD is contesting elections on 143 seats. They have given tickets to 24 women, which is more than 16 percent of some candidates. The nomination of a woman candidate of RJD from Mohaniyan has been cancelled.
How many women did BJP-JDU give tickets to?
In this election, there is a friendly fight between the Indian Alliance parties on many seats. Congress is contesting elections on 61 seats, out of which they have given tickets to 5 women. That means the share of women in candidature is more than 8 percent. On behalf of NDA, JDU-BJP is contesting elections on 101-101 seats. Both the parties gave tickets to 13 women each. Chirag Paswan’s party LJP (R) and Upendra Kushwaha’s party RLM have fielded 6 women candidates.
Jitan Ram Manjhi’s party HAM has given tickets to 2 women out of 6 seats. Both are his family members or relatives. Out of 243 seats in Bihar, NDA has given tickets to 35 women while from the Grand Alliance, RJD and Congress have given tickets to 29 women out of 204 seats. No party has been able to implement the policy of 33 percent women reservation.
Attempt to woo women voters
The current Nitish Kumar government has already implemented many schemes for the welfare of women. Before the elections, Nitish government started Mukhyamantri Mahila Rozgar Yojana, under which Rs 10,000 were transferred to the accounts of 1.21 crore women. Earlier, the NDA government also increased the honorarium of Anganwadi maids and cooks.
To woo women voters, RJD Chief Tejashwi Yadav has promised Jeevika Didi a permanent job and a monthly salary of Rs 30,000. He has also promised to provide a government job to every family of Bihar.
