The US Pacific Fleet issued an official statement on Monday (October 27, 2025) saying that on Sunday (October 26, 2025) at 2.45 pm (local time), an MH-60R Sea Hawk helicopter deployed aboard the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN-68), assigned to the Battle Cats of the Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM-73) Had gone. During this time, during a routine operation, this helicopter crashed in the South China Sea.
All three pilots deployed on the helicopter are safe
According to the Pacific Fleet, the search team of the Carrier Strike Group safely rescued the three pilots and other crew members deployed on the helicopter, but within just half an hour of this incident, i.e. at 3.15 minutes, an F-18 Super Hornet fighter aircraft deployed on Nimitz crashed in the South China Sea. During this time, these fighter jets were assigned to the Fighting Redcocks of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA-22) for operations. The search team later rescued both the pilots of this fighter plane safely.
Aircraft crashed during routine operation
The USS Nimitz is a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier of the US Navy, on which dozens of fighter planes and helicopters can be deployed. These days, this aircraft carrier is deployed in the Area of Responsibility of Indo-Pacific Command (Headquarters-Hawaiian Islands).
According to the Pacific Fleet, both crashes occurred during routine operations and an investigation into both incidents has been ordered, but these two incidents have shocked the US Navy as well as the entire world, because incidents of two aircraft each crashing into a warship simultaneously have come to light.
Strict comment from China’s Foreign Ministry
The South China Sea is considered one of the most sensitive maritime areas in the world, because China wants to establish its supremacy over this entire sea and does not allow the navies of neighboring countries like Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam to enter, but America and other western countries adopt the policy of Freedom of Navigation and navigate in this sea and share maneuvers and passage with the countries that have tension with China. China has reacted sharply to the US aircraft crash. China’s Foreign Ministry said in a strict tone that the American aircraft crashed during a maneuver.
