The Modi government has made active and continuous diplomatic efforts for the release and apology of more than 10,000 Indians imprisoned abroad in various allegations since coming to power in 2014, due to which they returned home. On Friday (March 28, 2025), official sources said that the UAE (UAE) shows a strong bilateral relations between India and the Gulf country by the UAE (UAE) forgiving about 500 Indian prisoners in the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
An official said, “The government led by Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi prioritized the welfare of Indian citizens abroad since the arrival of 2014 and ensured a safe return of around 10,000 Indians imprisoned abroad through diplomatic dialogue and high-level intervention.”
Officials said the prime examples of the release of Indian citizens due to diplomatic efforts include the release of 2,783 Indian prisoners from UAE in 2022 and the release of 850 prisoners in Saudi Arabia. Saudi King Mohammed bin Salman ordered the release of Indian prisoners during his visit to India in 2019.
Sources said that Qatar had released the ex -servicemen of the Indian Navy, who was sentenced to death in the year 2023, which was an important incident of release of Indian prisoners. He said that eight ex -soldiers were sentenced to death penalty and India’s sentence was reduced due to India’s diplomatic intervention and after that most of them were released.
Sources underlined that another Islamic country Iran released 77 Indian nationals in 2024 and 43 including 12 fishermen in 2023, while the Bahrain government had waived 250 Indian prisoners during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit in 2019.
He said that Amir of Kuwait released 22 Indians after diplomatic talks in 2017 and reduced the sentence of 97 others.
Official sources said that due to regular intervention of India, Indian fishermen have been released regularly by Sri Lanka and 3,697 fishermen have been released since 2014. He informed that since 2014, the release of 2,639 fishermen and 71 civilian prisoners from Pakistan has been ensured due to tireless diplomatic efforts. Officials said that most of these successes were achieved with global leaders due to personal coordination of PM Modi.
