Maulana Arshad Madani, president of Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind, has moved the Delhi High Court to stop the release of the film ‘Udaipur files’ based on the murder of tailor Kanhaiya Lal Sahu in Udaipur. Madani’s petition states that this film is “extremely inflammatory”, which can incite communal tension and spoil the public system.
It further states that its trailer also has the ability to incite communal tension and it presents a very divisive and inflammatory story. It has also been said that the film mentions the sensitive and under consideration of the Gyanvapi mosque, which is currently pending in the Varanasi district court and the Supreme Court, and the controversial statement of former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Nupur Sharma has been exaggerated. What happened in Delhi High Court?
A petition challenging the release of the film ‘Udaipur Files’ was heard in the Delhi High Court. Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay said in a strict tone that “no one’s religious feelings can be hurt in the name of freedom of expression.” At the same time, the counsel for the censor board told the court that all objectionable scenes have been removed from the film. However, on behalf of Maulana Arshad Madni, President of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, senior advocate Kapil Sibal argued that the film has scenes that can incite religious hatred and violate constitutional principles. He questioned whether the controversial content should be removed only on the trailer or on the whole film, and the assurance that nothing has been objectionable.
High court ordered a special screening of the film
In response, the Chief Justice directed that the entire film should be shown for the legal team of the petitioners. Filmmaker’s lawyer Chetan Sharma also requested the presence of a fair observer during the screening, but the Chief Justice insisted that the rights of the petitioners should be honored. He emphasized that constitutional instructions should be followed and freedom of expression should not be justified for humiliating any religious community.

What happened in the Supreme Court?
