A local leader of the Labor Party has been fined 40,000 pounds (47 lakh) for violating immigration laws in West London. The appeal filed against the action taken against the Indian student for illegally employing her as a nanny has been rejected.

According to a report in The Daily Telegraph, councilor and lawyer Hina Mir had hired 22-year-old Himanshi Gongle for 1,200 pounds (1.4 lakh) per month in cash, even though the Indian student had no legal right to work in Britain. According to a newspaper, Mir gave the student’s nickname as Riya and claimed that she was a social visitor who would often come to his house to play video games, watch TV and relax and do household chores.

Britain’s Home Department gave a statement

However, Britain’s Home Office told the court that the student appeared to be in distress when she stopped a police car to seek help in August last year. She was found to be in the country illegally after her visa expired in March 2023 and told authorities she felt as if she had been physically abused. After losing his appeal against an immigration decision in January, Mir will have to pay a fine of £40,000 as well as court costs of £3,620 (4 lakh 34 thousand).

Why is this issue important?

This raises big questions on the accountability of political figures in Britain. Illegal working is a criminal offense in the UK, which can carry heavy fines and penalties. This case further strengthens the increasing sensitivity over the cases of exploitation of Indian students.
