Akhlaq Muhammad Khan, who was identified as ‘Shaharyar’, was born on 16 June 1936 in a Muslim family in Amla in Bareilly district of Uttar Pradesh. His father Abu Muhammad Khan was a police officer and he wanted his son to become a police officer like him.

But Shaharyar’s trend was towards literature and poetry. After completing his early education in Hardoi, he moved to Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in 1948, where he earned a postgraduate degree in Urdu in 1961.

However, Shaharyar started poetry in the 1960s itself. He was soon recognized for his unique style. The mixture of sadness and irony in his poetry brought a new color in the Urdu poetry of that time. In connection with the famous poet Khalil-ur-Rehman Azmi, his poetry nikhri and he adopted ‘Shaharyar’ Takhalus.

Not only this, Shaharyar also left his mark in Hindi cinema. He made the song ‘In Aankh Ki Mastane Thousand Hai’, ‘Dil Cheese Kya Hai, Aap Meri Jaan Logi’, ‘Jutiju, who did not, we did not’ recognize the song ‘Dil Baat Kya Hai’ from the 1981 film ‘Umrao Jaan’.

In addition, his songs written for films like Gaman (1978) and Anjuman showed his sensitivity and beauty of words. However, Shaharyar did not consider himself a film poet.

He wrote the film songs at the behest of his director friend Muzaffar Ali. Along with writing songs in films, Shaharyar retained the traditional color of Urdu poetry and gave a place in his poetry to problems of modern life, such as loneliness, stress and social change.
