The central government employees are going to bring happiness tomorrow i.e. on the morning of April 1. Actually, Unified Pension Scheme – UPS is going to be implemented from 1 April 2025. This new scheme has been brought to meet the years -old demand of employees who were demanding to bring back the guaranteed pension before the National Pension System (NPS).

What is the difference between NPS and UPS?

The NPS does not have a guaranteed pension, but the investment made in it gets returns on the basis of stock market performance. In the long term, NPS is expected to have good returns, but there is no fixed pension. At the same time, under the UPS, government employees will be given a guaranteed pension of up to 50 percent of their last 12 months average basic salary. However, this facility will not be available to all employees, but some conditions have to be fulfilled to get it.

Under what circumstances will guaranteed pension be given?

The employee has to fulfill several conditions to get a guaranteed pension.

Retirement after completing minimum 10 years of government service.

Forcibly retirement by the government under FR 56 rules.

In the case of voluntary retirement, if the employee has completed at least 25 years of service.

If an employee takes voluntary retirement after 25 years of service, he will get pension from the age on which he receives general retirement.

50 percent pension conditions

The UPS is designed in such a way that the eligible government employees can get up to 50 % of their last 12 months average basic salary as pension. But not all employees will get this facility. According to the notification of 24 January 2025 issued by the government, if the employee has completed the qualification service of at least 25 years, then he will get the entire 50 percent basic salary as pension.

At the same time, if the service period of the employee is less than 25 years, then the pension amount will be given proportionately. A minimum pension guarantee of Rs 10,000 per month will be given to employees who have completed 10 years or more service.
