United Nations Layoff: United Nations have been a major pillar of global peace, human assistance and multilateral cooperation since the establishment of the United Nations. Now the organization itself seems to be getting caught in economic crisis. According to the report by Reuters, the UN Secretariat is going to deduct 20% in the annual budget of $ 3.7 billion, which will eliminate about 6,900 jobs.

The main reason for this deduction is to cut payment from America. The United States, which borres about 25% of the United Nations budget, owes more than $ 1.5 billion, which includes the current and previous financial year.

A review plan called UN80 and Guterres warning
Part of this deduction is a reorganization plan called “UN80”, which was launched in March 2025. UN Controller Chandramouli Ramanathan wrote in his memorandum, “It is an ambitious attempt to ensure that the United Nations is suitable for supporting multilateralism of the 21st century.” General Secretary Antonio Guterres also made it clear in public briefing that this is the time of “difficult but necessary decisions”. He said that the organization would have to move towards the merger of departments, redistribution of resources and reducing bureaucracy.

Role of America and China
Apart from the US, China, which is the second largest donor in the United Nations, has also not paid on time. The combined funding of both countries is around 40%. This delay is severely affecting the liquidity of the United Nations. During the tenure of the Donald Trump administration, the US government suddenly stopped the funds offered for the UN human agencies, which had to shut dozens of programs. Tom Fletcher, who leads the coordination office of human affairs. He said that his agency had to cut 20% staff to make up for a loss of $ 58 million.

Effect on network not just one organization
If this deduction is applied in the UN, then its effect will not only be limited to employees or jobs, but it will reduce the capacity of peace installation missions. Humanitarian aid campaign will be interrupted. Work on climate change and sustainable development goals can be slow. Areas like justice, human rights and education will be affected. UN Director Richard Govan in the International Crisis Group says that it is not clear whether this type of deduction will satisfy the Trump administration. It is possible that America consider it a strategic victory, but do not give any concession in funding.
